How to Market on TikTok?

TikTok is booming in the world of social media. It has more than 800 million users worldwide, which means it’s larger than both Pinterest and Twitter. It was the most downloaded app as of January 2020. It’s unlikely to be a passing fad, and if your audience is primarily young, your social media marketing strategy should include marketing on this platform.

What is TikTok?

TikTok is a social media app centered around short videos uploaded by users. Videos can be up to 15 seconds long, and users can connect several clips for a total of 60 seconds. Videos created outside the app can also be uploaded, and there’s an option for live streaming.

TikTok users edit their videos for their followers with filters, music, effects, and captions. Like other social media platforms, hashtags are used to help non-followers discover content. Hashtagged challenges encourage users to participate and join in challenges. Much of what’s on TikTok is comedic. There are several video genres, including lip-syncing, cringe videos, and short skits.

Does Your Audience Use TikTok?

With millions of users worldwide, there’s a good chance at least some of your audience is using TikTok. The app is most popular with young people between the age of 16 and 24 with approximately 41 percent of users in this demographic. TikTok has become a creative outlet for teenagers and young adults alike.

If the majority of your audience is in an older age bracket, your social medial marketing efforts might be better spent on a different platform. If you market to older millennials, consider taking advantage of TikTok editing tools to create video content for your followers to post to other platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.

Marketing on TikTok

There are two main ways to market on TikTok. The options are:

  • Creating original content
  • Working with influencers

Making your content can be a great marketing strategy for TikTok, but it also takes a lot of creativity and time. If your content isn’t viral, it’s likely to be ignored by TikTok users. To strive for shareable content, use the Discover page to track trending hashtags. Once you know what’s trending, create your own content that includes an element of your business but is also silly or funny.

The Discover tab can be used to find out who is posting popular videos in your niche. Search a few keywords related to your niche and find the users with the most popular videos and largest following. Consider reaching out to users with a large following and pay them to use your product on camera.

Getting Help with TikTok Marketing

TikTok also has an advertising platform that can expand your reach. You can run ads that appear in story, in feed, post roll and on the detail page. Ads on TikTok are intended to blend in with average user experience as much as possible.
